By Susun Weed Preventing colds and the flu can be summed up in three words: Wash your hands. The viruses that cause colds and the flu most readily enter our bodies by means of our hands. Wash your hands after shopping. Remind your children to wash their hands as soon as they come home from school. A little “hysterical hygiene” goes a long way to keeping colds at bay. Of course, there are herbs that can be used to help thwart colds and the flu. Yarrow is a clear favorite, especially as a tincture. Teachers, moms, and wise children find a dose of 5-25 drops of yarrow tincture in the morning in some liquid reduces the likelihood of getting sick by more than half. Astragalus is gaining fame for its ability to support strong immune system functioning. I throw a few tongue-depressor-like pieces in my soups, where they infuse their goodness without imparting much flavor. Powdered astragalus can be added to almost anything, from oatmeal to pancakes, soups to gravies. And there is always the tincture, which works well in doses of 1-3 dropperfuls a day. (If at all possible, use domestic astragalus, rather than that from China.) Eleuthero, which used to be called Siberian ginseng, is another immune system nourisher, used in the same ways as astragalus: cooked into food or taken as a tincture. And don’t forget honey. A spoonful at the first sign of a sore throat or runny nose can kill the bacteria responsible and help you get better fast. (Note: Do not give honey to babies under 12 months old.) And if you do get sick, here’s my favorite way to get well fast. Treat a cold cold with heat. Treat a hot cold with cold. This may sound too easy, but it is actually one of the most effective ways I know of to minimize the severity and duration of a cold (or the flu). I first learned about cold colds and hot colds when I was studying Five Element Theory with a sweetheart who was attending acupuncture school. It is important to remember that “cold” and “hot” don’t refer to temperature; they refer to what we might call metabolism. Thus, the person with a cold cold could very well have a raging fever and the person with a hot cold may have no fever at all. Similarly, hot foods and herbs are not necessarily cooked, and cold foods and herbs need not be refrigerated. So how can we tell the difference between a cold cold and a hot cold? And what are cold herbs and hot herbs, cold foods and hot foods? The person with a cold cold (or a cold flu) is pale. Their bodily fluids are copious and without color: The nose runs with clear or white mucus; the bowels are loose and the feces are light in color; urination is profuse and colorless. The tongue may be coated with a white moss. If there is fever, it is accompanied by chills. The person with a cold cold seeks heat and hot foods. The person with a hot cold (or a hot flu) is ruddy; the face, or at least the cheeks, are very red. The eyes may feel dry and irritated. Their bodily fluids are scant and dark: nasal mucus is dry, yellowish, or “stopped up;” the bowels slow and feces are hard; urination is infrequent and highly colored. The tongue may be red or coated with a yellow moss. If there is a fever, it is “raging.” The person with a hot cold seeks coolness and has little appetite. When you have a cold cold, indulge your desire for heating foods and herbs: Drink lots of hot spicy herbal teas with honey*, such as ginger tea, cinnamon tea, or any of the spicy “Yogi Tea” type blends. Nourish yourself with chicken soup, beef broth, miso soup. Enjoy baked winter squash, baked potatoes, baked yams, baked garlic. Eat lots of olive oil, ghee, butter, olives, and avocados. Eat beans and eat the warming grains: kasha, rye, oats. Stay warm; take a hot bath or a hot shower and wrap up snugly before going to sleep. When you have a hot cold, indulge your desire for frozen fruit smoothies. Drink lemon and honey* water, iced nettle infusion, hibiscus and mint teas. Nourish yourself with seaweed salads, cucumber sandwiches, and fresh tomatoes with basil. Enjoy berries and melons, green salads, and roasted fowl. Eat the cooling grains: corn, millet, spelt. Eat a little something even if your appetite is small. Stay cool; take off your shoes and socks and put your bare feet on the ground. But keep covers handy when you go to sleep. You see, cold colds turn into hot colds and vice versa. They don’t stay the same the whole time you are sick. So be prepared to pull the covers up to your chattering teeth and flowing nose even if you went to bed stuffed up and sweltering. Or to throw off the pile of covers you clutched hours earlier. The real beauty of this idea of hot colds and cold colds is the premise that everything, even a cold, will change and so the cure comes not from knowing the right answer, but in following the flow of the sickness and offering appropriate treatments. I imagine a balance scale, swinging back and forth between hot and cold, with me gently damping the swings, making each one a little less severe, until single-pointed stillness - health - is regained. Whether dealing with a hot cold or a cold cold, you can eat as much of the neutral nourishing foods - rice, wheat, fish, honey*, and yogurt - as you wish. But, beware of taking vitamin C while harboring a cold or the flu; it is extremely cooling. I hope these tips for preventing and dealing with colds and the flu help you, and those you love, stay in glowing good health all winter long. Green Blessings. The World of HO Open Framed Motors

By Michael W.P. Ball Open framed motors for the majority of Brass Steam Locomotives and many Diesels still are in use since post World War II. They were a main stay to power the locomotive. These motors were all produced in Japan except for the Pitman Motor which was produced in the United States. About thirty five years ago the industry began changing over to the Can Motor. The Can Motor was introduced in new locomotives to be sold to the hobbyist. It wasn’t until a few years later that the hobbyist could buy the Can Motor for personal use. Why the sudden change to the Can Motor? What reason for such a major overhaul? The following is a presentation of the reasons for those changes and the advantages as well. The open frame motor was a nightmare to keep running. There were several reasons for this. 1. The brushes and armature are exposed to the atmosphere. This allows dust particles which are charged to accumulate on the armature and adhere to the brushes. This alone can cause major problems electrically. It takes more power to turn the motor due to resistance and debris build up. That is it creates a resistance which bogs done the motor. 2. The accumulation of static charged particles deposited on the two brushes becomes an inhibitor to the rotation of the armature and grinds it down making the motor useless. These particles also can cause scaring on the armature which can make the motor useless. 3. The open frame motor requires lubrication at each end of the motor where the bearings are located. The manufacturers would place a pad around the motor shaft next to the bearings. Here is where you would lubricate the motor. The problem is that these pads would get old and shrink thus eliminating the lubrication process. 4. The best thing to do is tear down the motor and rebuild/replace the vital components except the armature. This can be a difficult process and very time consuming. It doesn’t mean the motor is going to run any better. Open frame motors when left standing for any length of time, accumulate debris and generally won’t run. The Can Motor eliminated all of these problems and is far more sensitive to electrical input than the open framed motor. It was almost impossible running an open frame motor at low speeds where the Can Motor is best suited operationally. The open frame motor is not really adaptable to the new DCC operations. This is the opposite for the Can Motor as it is suited for running of locomotives which have the DCC decoders on board. The Can Motors are smaller than the open frame motors which made it easier for the hobbyist to install the new motor. Take fasted cardio in the morning for example. Are there risks in using this technique in an attempt to accelerate fat loss? Yes, absolutely. Cortisol is higher in the morning, so you are more catabolic and you might lose muscle. Does that mean there are no benefits and you should never use this technique? Not necessarily. Does doing cardio on an empty stomach guarantee youre going to lose muscle? No, it only increases the possibility. Yet many trainers, strength coaches, athletes and bodybuilders approach techniques like these with Its good or Its bad with no shades of grey in between. The truth is, the value of each technique depends very much on the context. I remember reading something Charles Poliquin wrote about how ridiculous it was to think about his manly men athletes (as he called them), such as a 6 foot 5 inch 250 pound hockey player, doing any kind of conventional aerobics. That makes complete sense to me - in that context. If the athlete shows up after the off season carrying some undesired body fat, that weight can easily be shed with strength training and nutrition. Combine that with energy expended from practice time and no aerobics are necessary. But does that mean All aerobics are bad or Cardio is completely worthless. Well, again, it depends on the context. Bad or worthless when? How much? How intense? What kind? Under what circumstances? And for whom? Are we talking about a 55 year old sedentary woman with 35% body fat, an elite shot putter or a bodybuilder six weeks out from a competition? I think these rigid all or none beliefs get formed gradually over a whole lifetime of experiences. We tend to collect our own personal biases and carry them along with us I know I had to overcome my pure bodybuilder mentality and develop more flexibility in my approaches in order to really serve my non-bodybuilder clients the best. I specialize in fat loss including nutrition, exercise and the psychological/emotional aspects - and my personal interest is bodybuilding. I dont train people for sports, so I dont have the perspective that most strength coaches do. Similarly, I imagine that many top strength coaches have developed an anti-cardio bias from their experience working with power, speed and strength athletes who have always been told that aerobics kills your strength, and perhaps they generalize their beliefs to apply to everyone. Bottom line and the whole point of my article was that there are no absolutes, everything is context dependent. TV: Because its high risk, its not necessarily a fat loss technique I recommend for everyone all the time. But Im not afraid to use it and I believe it has benefits that can outweigh the risks, depending on the circumstances. I usually do fasted cardio in the morning about 8-12 weeks before a competition. But it depends on my weekly results. If Im losing fat quickly and easily, I dont need to use any high-risk techniques. Sometimes Ill still do cardio in the morning, because I like doing it then, but Ill have a whey protein drink or even a whole meal shortly beforehand. I like to have an enormous amount of flexibility in my approach. If theres a plateau in fat loss, I want to be able to dig into my bag of tricks and have a lot of stuff in there to pull out when I need it. If you only have one way and you get stuck, you have a problem. I dont like rigid formulas. I like freedom to choose my approach according to how things are going. Changing Careers? How to Get Around the Three Major Mental Roadblocks to Success

By Valerie Young A part of you can’t wait to dive into your new career — but you’re also smart enough to know that you can expect a few bumps along the road to success. By far, the biggest roadblocks exist between your own two ears! Let’s take a look at three common mental roadblocks and learn how to overcome them. ROADBLOCK No. 1: Wishful Thinking How many times have you wished you’d hit the lottery? Now, how many times have you actually won the lottery? Far too many people spend far too much time wishing when they should be dreaming. So, what’s the difference between wishing and dreaming? Wishing is passive. We wish for things over which we have little or no control. We wish we were taller or thinner. We wish the waiter would hurry up. We wish our boss wasn’t so [you fill in the blank]. The other thing about wishes is that they are often tinged with regrets about past decisions — both big and small. We wish we’d ordered the fish instead of the chicken. We wish we’d taken the other job. We wish we hadn’t let the love of our life get away. Dreaming is different. For one, a dream is active. Unlike wishes, we can actually do something about a dream. After all, you don’t “wish up” a plan, you dream one up! You may not get everything you dream of getting, but two things are certain: 1. It doesn’t take a single extra ounce of energy to dream big than it does to settle. 2. You’ve got a lot more to gain by shooting high than by shooting low. ROADBLOCK No. 2: What If Everyone Thinks You’re Crazy? You’ve probably already thought about the people you can count on to support your plan to create a more meaningful work/life. But have you also taken stock of those you should make a point NOT to turn to? Unless you come either from money or from a long line of pioneers, you may not get the support you want from your family. With the best of intentions, you may find your dream of quitting your job to pursue your dream career met with advice to “play it safe,” reminders that “you’re lucky to have a good job,” or a lecture on the seemingly insurmountable odds standing between you and success. No matter how old you are, or how much you deny it, family approval does matter. Which, of course, makes it all the more painful when the people we love fail to give us the emotional green light we so desperately seek. Other people’s fear, skepticism, and negativity can be as contagious as the flu. And unless you’ve built up your immune system, these dream stompers can knock you for a loop — especially when they are right in your own family. You have two choices. You can either continue to turn to these naysayers in hopes that they’ll respond differently — or, you can choose the saner path of acceptance. Don’t look for support from people whose life experiences have not prepared them to give it fully. Instead, take advantage of the support that really is available. ROADBLOCK No. 3: Fear of Change The closer you come to leaving the security of your 9-to-5 job (no matter how much you want out) the greater your level of excitement and trepidation (see “Word to the Wise,” below). Anyone who has ever ventured out of their safe little world will tell you they had doubts. But when it comes to making a major life change, not only is a certain amount of fear perfectly normal, it’s actually helpful. For example, it’s our healthy fears that keep us from jumping off cliffs. And the great thing about fear is that there are ways to get around it. So, try laughing in the face of fear. Am I kidding? No. Ridiculing your fears is actually a very effective technique for banishing them — because the mind rejects that which it considers absurd. The trick is to turn your fears into a ridiculous event in your mind. That way, you allow your natural human reaction to absurdity to take over and dismiss them. Try it yourself. Take your biggest fear and take it to extremes. Really exaggerate it. Let’s say you’re paralyzed by the fear of failure. Try picturing your entire family, all of your friends, your neighbors, everyone you went to high school with, even your boss, standing outside your cardboard-box home holding up signs that read: “We Told You So!” Pretty ridiculous, right? When you realize that your worst-case fantasy is just that — a fantasy — what felt overwhelming will now feel much more manageable. Another way to manage the fear of venturing out on your own is to start small. If the thought of just up and quitting your day job frightens you, start building your client base on the side. Begin with low-risk steps and gradually work your way up to the harder stuff. Remember, courage is not a matter of losing your fear so you can take action; courage comes from taking action. And that, in turn, helps you overcome your fear. When you can act despite your fears, you will be rewarded many times over.
