By Harry Hoover Hundreds of “consultants” make millions of dollars each year teaching seminars and boot camps, and selling newsletters about marketing’s magic bullet - that one simple thing you can do to fill up your register with virtually no effort on your part. People buy this tripe because they want “simple” and “no effort” ways to move their business forward. All those magic bullet consultants are wrong. I have the secret and I am going to share it, but you won’t be happy about it. My marketing magic bullet: focus, discipline and consistency. Yes, my magic bullet involves some work on your part. Focus requires you to define your audiences, learn about their behavior, and then provide relevant and believable information, communicated in an original, impactful fashion. Discipline necessitates developing a marketing plan and implementing it aggressively. Your plan must also include a sales element. I know businesses that market and then just expect clients to flock to them with wallets in hand. Unfortunately for these businesses, it requires some effort on their part. Sorry, no passive income. Finally, we come to consistency. This means implementing your program even after you are tired of it. And don’t change your message and marketing tactics on a whim. The race goes to the marathon man, not the sprinter. Some other smart people agree with me. Business Coach Brent Dees says, “You can do anything, but you can’t do everything. If you focus, you can accomplish your goals.” Friend Bill Loeffler used to tell clients, “We can’t do everything. So marketers need other methods of communicating the products worth to the consumer. The package becomes an obvious and valuable means to that end. The point is if someone doesn’t pick up your product they are never going to buy it. That’s where the packaging as an advertisement comes into play. How can you engage the consumer at the beginning of the product relationship? The package is your silent salesperson and it better have the right message delivered to the right audience — no matter what product is inside. It’s all about the package (or should be) and who buy’s it and why is it purchased. Understanding and cultivating the consumer is an ongoing task. Consumer preferences can change on a whim. When it comes to product packaging, its important to understand the mindset behind consumer decisions. Each year new trends move into the foreground. Yet, while some are here to stay others move on as quickly as the came in to being. Some trends become mainstream across all industries, ethnicities, and generations. Trends have power. Use them wisely and you will reap the rewards. Here are 10 packaging trends that will impact whether the consumer will purchase your products or not. 1) The Trend - The Alpha Female.She is the primary shopper and 80% of the time the decision maker. Companies are finally waking up to the power of the purse. She’s your primary target no matter what her age bracket. Fortunately, we have passed the “Age of Pink” where marketers believed that anything pink would sell. Now companies are looking at what women really want and not just what advertisers think they want. There is a new generation of pink packaged products, but the color is now utilized in a way that makes sense. It is not used simply because marketers consider it feminine. What To Look For And Do:Solve her problems. She is overworked, overstressed, time-crunched, multitasking and in a hurry. Offer her a solution. Most of all make it easy with simple instructions and virtually a no-brainer to make the purchasing decision. Fulfill these needs and you will have a packaging winner. 2) The Trend - Baby’s Got Bling.The luxury market is on the rise. Whether its designer bottled water or pet care products, consumers are willing to pay a premium. Nothing is too off the wall in the luxury market. If its packaged right, it will pique the customers interest. Consumers are on the lookout for that one unique product that they just have to own. A good example is the recent introduction of clear vinyl handbags. This spawned off of the clear bags used to display toiletries to security at the airport. Now consumers are spending hundreds even thousand of dollars to own one. Will it last? Who knows, however, some designers are making serious bucks. What To Look For And Do:Trade up on existing products. Move them out of mainstay categories and into the luxury market. More luxurious packaging on commodity items will make them seem special. The middle of the road packaging market is declining. People are either buying on price or paying a premium to satisfy a need. 3. The Trend - Brand Slutting. Forget about brand loyalty. Those days are gone. Marketers have spent big bucks trying to ensure product commitment but consumers are moving from loyalty purchases and trying new products. One thing that is driving this trend is the growth of private label packaging. PLMA President Brian Sharoff presented these findings at a recent trade show. According to the survey, 41% of shoppers say they are “frequent” buyers of store brands, up from 36% five years ago. When the product looks as good and works as well as branded products, consumers are willing to take a chance. If their needs are met, chances are they will never go back. What To Look For And Do:Opportunities abound in private label packaging that transcends traditional categories. Look at the growth of the tea industry. Virtually every conceivable tea is on the market today and this market is growing. Consider how you can take an existing product and create something consumers will desire to try. 4. The Trend - BOOM.Who will be the biggest future purchasing demographic? The 50+ generation. The numbers are amazing and its a continued growth market too. Earn this customers TRUST and you will retain their purchasing power for 25 years. So why aren’t we getting products packaged for this market? Many of the seniors issues are the same as other consumers, they just need more of it: Easy to open, easy to read, easy to handle or store. What To Look For And Do:Dont ignore ways to improve existing product packaging: larger type, ergonomic capabilities or even products that are easier to hold onto. I’m amazed by the lack of innovation in this category. When we brainstormed at the FlexPack Conference about senior friendly product concepts, the audience offered lots of great ideas about how to serve the market sector. 5. The Trend - Greenwash Me.Its all about the “green” or lack of it. This time I think its going to last. Consumers are being bombarded with messages about the environment. We all are media creatures and the media loves anything “green.” You may not be aware that consumers are on their third wave of environmental awareness. The last two influences died out once the reality set in that it cost the consumer more to be “green.” But retail drivers such as Wal-Mart and Tesco are holding fast to their line in the sand. The standards they established and are trying to implement will drive “green” initiatives down through the entire retail chain. Whether its a true mandate or a political ploy, consumers are awash in a sea of “green” information. Additionally, the packaging of products with environmentally friendly materials is being scrutinized. What To Look For And Do:Explore ways to “green” up your product packaging. Whether its eco-friendly, bio resins, bio plastics, recyclable, post consumer waste or whatever works for your business, explore these options in your product packaging. Be wary of trotting out a so-called environmentally friendly package just to capture a trend. Consumers will see through this ruse. 6. The Trend - Make It Mine.Personalization or customization is hot. Consumers want products uniquely theirs. Treat them special and not just as one of the masses. Make them feel like you understand their needs. Offer them ways to expand their brand loyalty through a product with which they are already comfortable. What To Look For And Do:Dont overlook ways to engage your consumer though personalization of their favorite products. Many major marketers have already jumped on this bandwagon. Personalized catsup, cereal and candy are a few examples. Ask how you can create a personal bond with this consumer through product packaging. 7. The Trend - WOM - Word of Mouth Marketing. Do you have a satisfied consumer? How can you persuade them to pass the word on to other potential customers? The key is to create a buzz about your product that is so strong a consumer needs to tell someone about it. What To Look For And Do:How can you turn a customer into an evangelist for your product? Offer them something special in return for their loyalty or support. Offer them other products made by your company. Set up a rewards program. Dont just offer a few cents off. That doesn’t work. Give something of real “value” to the customer and not necessarily money. 8. The Trend - Your Nose Knows.Smell has been one of the least used senses incorporated into product packaging. That is changing. Companies are figuring out ways to “connect” to the consumer through the sense of smell. The continued growth of scent marketing is more than just an odor; its a way to reach consumers through a sensory relationship. What To Look For And Do:Integrate smell into your product package. The Trend - Se Habla Chinese?I recently read a staggering statistic. China is now the worlds largest packaging market. Its relative to disposable income and the demand for increased consumer goods as incomes increase. In the US we are already well established in marketing to the Hispanic consumer. Virtually every packaged product is bilingual, but what about markets outside the US? We are no longer the primary player. Its important not to overlook the globalization of consumer product packaging. Your product may be delivered to a consumer halfway round the world What To Look For And Do:Think global. Think about customers from all countries; not just the country of manufacturer. Be sure and study the cultural ramifications too. What works for product packaging in one country might not work in another. 10. The Trend - Code Orange.Consumers are worried. Look at the recent e-coli and salmonella product recalls. Consumers are leery of what they buy, what it’s made of, how its processed, and where it comes from. More importantly they are beginning to question its security through the distribution channel. What To Look For And Do:Pay attention to packaging innovations that can track, record, and provide product integrity or security. Look for devices that consumers, not just the manufactures, can understand. For example, there are labels that change color when a product has expired or has become contaminated. This gives consumers a heads up not to purchase that particular product. One negative trend I need to mention - Gotta Change.Why? Why fix what isn’t broken? Consumers are fed up with products that they like but they can’t identify because of the new and improved product packaging. Look for ways to engage the consumer with the existing product packaging that is familiar and trusted. Pay attention to and study packaging trends. They offer predictions of where the market is moving. Trends have to be understood in order to appreciate how they can impact your business. Have you ever counted how many new product introductions there are annually, and how many failures? Give it a shot. Trends can make or break a products profitable introduction or prelude its disaster. Be sure to keep your packaging on track with the consumer and incorporate packaging trends where they make sense. To this end, you may want to consider including vows that you have written yourself as part of the wedding ceremony. While the traditional vows may be beautifully written, that does not necessarily mean that they are the right ones for the two of you. The first thing to think about is what you really want to say in your vows. While the deep affection you and your beloved have for each other is the reason you are entering into the honorable estate of holy matrimony, you might also want to include such concepts as friendship, hope, peace, respect, kindness, patience, loyalty, and a shared future. You might also want to include a passage about welcoming your new spouse into your family and becoming a part of theirs. Your desire to have a family of your own might be a part of the thoughts you express to each other as well. Look at some sample vows for inspiration. The librarian at your local public library should be able to suggest some books for this purpose. If you are working with a wedding planner, he or she may be able to suggest some good sources of information as well. Reciting your vows is not like an exercise in public speaking in that it needs to last for a certain amount of minutes or have a specific word count. Use as many or as few words as you need to express the promises you are making to your spouse. This is your day and no one is going to think it amiss if your vows are wordy and flowing or brief and to the point. To that end, some couples find it helpful to try to write their vows together, while others would feel more comfortable working individually. This is also a case where no one solution is inherently better than the other; people just need to determine what would work best for them. The Square Boat Which Wouldn’t Float

By John T Jones, Ph.D. It seems that the kids in our neighborhood were always building something. If it wasnt stilts, it was rubber guns (probably a lost art). If it wasnt airplanes, it was scooters. If it wasnt go-carts, it was pigeon coops. It never ended. A supply of suitable materials was the main problem faced by us early builders. Junk is what things were built from. That often showed in the final product. But we always looked on our great creation with pride until a disaster destroyed our masterpiece. In pioneer days, the Jordan River that runs through the Salt Lake Valley was a clear stream full of trout. We had never seen it that way. It was totally polluted in our day. We were told it was a clean, clear fishing stream by Mr. Foster (who grew truck crops on a two or three acre plot to feed his family). He had caught many trout from the river when he was a boy. We sometimes caught trout from the river too, but we had to fish where fresh water streams entered the filthy waters of the river. Sometimes the state dumped trout into the river at the fairgrounds after their exhibition at the State Fair, but that was rare, and the trout were either quickly fished out or died in the muck. Still, the river was our playground. We were told never to get into the water or we would die of the bubonic plague or be drowned in a whirlpool. None of us died of the plague but some of us did drown. One of my friends tried to rescue his brother while by grandfather played his accordion in the park only a few hundred yards away. Both boys were lost while we enjoyed the music, not knowing what was going on. Things were tough on kids in those days. Two of our friends were killed when their bike was hit by a cement truck racing down the street to get concrete to the arms plant. A brother and sister we knew where killed by a truck taking ammunition from the arms plant to the railroad dock. The WAC driver fell asleep. One of our friends died when he fell from a fence while he and his siblings were stealing a few lumps of coal from the coal yard. A baby was lost when a sibling closed the drawer where the mother kept the child. Our widower shoemaker lost two children when a son tried to save his sister from highway traffic. (Later the shoemaker, who did not trust banks, lost his lifes savings when his last surviving son stole the money.) There were the diseases too. Polio scared us all, but kids died of a number of other ailments because there was no penicillin or sulfa drugs to help them. Death was all around us, but the scariest thing was when young mothers died from giving childbirth. We needed not to think to much on these things. So maybe that is partly why we built a wide range of contraptions. Following is a poem about a boat that was built in my backyard. The Square Boat Which Wouldn’t Float by Taylor Jones Saturday, April 19, 1999 (Modified November 3, 2005) Aaron had the idea: A boat on the Jordan to float. So Dick and Aaron and all the big guys Built a boat before our eyes. It was shaped appropriately Like a coffin. It had square sides And a flat bottom. They nailed and tarred; It weighed a ton. It took forever to get it to the river Where we could have some fun. Well, every kid in town Watched the show. We pushed the boat in the water To see if it would go. Aaron was in the middle And Dick was in the stern. Would the thing float or not? That we would soon learn. They paddled it out into the middle Of that muddy Jordan River. At first things looked pretty good. It was quite a clipper. Then slowly, slowly, did we see, Right before our eyes, That Aaron and the boys would be swimming; It was the boat’s demise. Yes, it sank like that concrete ship That lay’s on Cape May’s shore. That bungling concrete vessel Made just for the war. And just before Abandon Ship! There was our little war Because there was a good supply of mud On good Old Jordan’s shore. So began the mud fight Until the ship did sink. They were covered with mud from head to foot Until they gulped the drink So all the work on that great boat Was lost in just a wink. It sank so fast from bow to mast, I could hardly blink. I miss those days of carefree youth, Of boats, and planes, and cars. But then the boys all left home To fight in a real war. Orville and Virgil never came home. They were not alone. Avoid these common beginners’ mistakes and soon you will be creating stunning pieces of cross-stitch work to treasure. 1. Choosing the wrong pattern With the extensive range of charts on offer it is often tempting to start with something too complicated. For your first cross stitch project choose a chart with a relatively small design area and no more than 3 or 4 worked colours. You will have the satisfaction of completing it relatively quickly and can soon progress to something more challenging. 2. Tangling your threads Theres nothing more stressful than tangled threads so always keep them organised. When starting a project, punch a line of holes in a piece of card and loosely tie each coloured skein through a separate hole. Label each hole with the appropriate thread reference number and chart symbol. 3. Not finishing your edges Some even weave fabrics and linens fray easily. Before you start stitching, prepare your fabric properly by loosely back stitching around the edges with cotton. 4. Loosing your place on the chart For a large piece of work it is sometimes hard to keep your place on the chart. Before you start work, divide your chart into a grid of workable areas and mark with a coloured pencil. Stitch a corresponding grid onto your fabric using brightly coloured cotton. Sew loosely so that the cotton can be removed easily on completion of the project. 5. Stitching too tightly Keep your stitches evenly tensioned or your fabric will buckle or stretch out of shape. Many cross-stitchers find that a hoop helps to keep the fabric taut as they work. 6. Not starting in the middle The centre of a chart is clearly marked. You should always start stitching from this point and work outwards to the edges of your design otherwise your fabric will pull out of shape. 7. Leaving the needle in your work Always remove the needle when you finish sewing to avoid rust marks staining your fabric. 8. Getting your work dirty Grubby work looks unattractive. Wash your hands before you stitch and store ongoing work in a sealed bag or container. Finished pieces can be washed by hand with a gentle detergent. Dry by rolling in a towel - never wring fabric. 9. Starting with a knot Knots should never be used to start off a new thread. Instead, leave a 10mm length of thread at the back of your work. Hold it against the fabric as you work your next stitches and it will eventually be kept in place by the new stitches. Trim off any excess thread. 10. Straining your eyes It is very important to avoid eye strain by working in a well lit room. During daylight hours, work by a window where possible. Consider buying a halogen lamp for stitching in the evenings. If your eyesight is really poor, you might need to invest in a magnifier to place in front of your work.
